I never dreamed that I would be a professional accountant, especially in the public practice. Nevertheless I am because CGA changed and is still changing my life and destination and I am proud of the changes.
I started CGA studies in 1999 by chance with no intention that would help so much. However it does! Two years of studies of CGA courses, not only change me to a professional accountant, promoted my English, but also help me immigrate to Canada. And more it helped me find a job later in an accounting firm and even I set up my own accounting firm in Calgary, Canada. I appreciate the chance that brought me to the CGA road in 1999, when I happened to be one of the first group students of Barbara Ko, who has brought thousands of students to the road.
Looking around that so many new comers – engineers, professors, MBAs, who are having to run all around to find a job, or worrying to be laid off, while I am enjoying the benefits as a CGA – the feeling of value and respect. Firstly, I have many friends, at least more than 100 bosses of various businesses, not mention much more individuals who come for help and advice of their personal income tax. They trust me who am a professional, telling me everything – business and non-business. I advise them of their business arrangement, personal tax, their home purchase plan, their child education and even help them buy computer online. As a CGA my work is very valuable, and I am so proud of that. For example, I helped one of my clients refund more than $9,000 corporation tax, other two $2,000 because of they omitted the claim of their vehicle GST, not mention the amortisation on corporation tax. As for personal tax, I even can not count the numbers and amounts.
A CGA in North America means not only you possesses the professional knowledge, but more – you are the one who has ethic and act professionally. Will you be proud if your signature can be used for others to apply identity (like passport or permanent resident card)? Will you be proud if your professional judgement can refund thousands of money for tax purpose? Will you be proud if you have automatically 30% off when you buy insurance or, like me, without any mortgage, within one day to apply tens of thousands of line of credit? I believe you agree on the answer – Yes!
I know it is not easy to become a CGA. And it more difficult to keep a CGA public practitioner because he needs to upgrade himself every minute, and be aware of the ethics every minute -- particularly for me who have just started it. But all of the efforts are worthwhile – nothing could be more important than to be respected and value rewarded.
